Vehicle Registration

In Alberta all vehicles being operated or parked on public roads or property must be registered and insured. The law even includes off-road vehicles such as snowmobiles and dirt bikes.

A person under 18 years old must have parental consent to register a vehicle in their name.

You will be required to provide valid proof of insurance to renew your vehicle.

If you already have a valid licence plate and registration and want to use it on a new vehicle, you can request it to be transferred.

Vehicles registered outside Alberta must pass an inspection before licence plates are issued.

A salvage vehicle must be inspected by a licensed technician and registered before it can be re-registered in Alberta.

In transit permits allow an insured, unregistered vehicle or trailer to move from point A to point B within Canada.

A parking placard allows people who cannot walk 50 metres (164 feet) to use disabled parking stalls.

The placards are issued to individuals who provide proper proof that they meet the requirements.

If your licence plate is lost or stolen, report it to the police agency where the loss or theft occurred. A police file number is required to replace the licence plate.

To replace the licence plate, visit a registry agent office and:

If your licence plate becomes difficult to read due to wear or damage, it could result in a fine. You must apply for a replacement licence plate through a registry agent.
